Switch Your Fruit of Choice to the Kiwifruit
The kiwi. We all know it as the green tasty little fruit with the brown, fuzzy exterior. But where does the kiwi come from and why exactly is it so healthy?
The kiwifruit is originally from China. If you find yourself in an Asian supermarket you are actually likely to find the best kiwifruit options there. In American supermarkets, kiwifruits easily go for about 2 for a dollar. But you can easily get an entire basket of kiwifruits in an Asian alternative market for only a few dollars more. And many times the kiwis found in the Asian supermarkets are riper and ready to eat as soon as you bring them home. Since the popularity of the kiwifruit has now grown, kiwis are also farmed in Chile, Italy, New Zealand, Greece, France and some parts of California in America.
Kiwis are the perfect summer fruit. They pair perfectly in a fruit or dinner salad and add an extra bit of color to the perfect cold beverage when you are lying out in the summer sun. Kiwifruits are also high in vitamin C. So if you are sick of eating the same old thing or have picky kids, the kiwi is the best way to enjoy something different and exotic while still eating healthy. Sure, plenty of citrus fruits are high in vitamin C, but that can get old. Not to mention the fact that many people have sensitive stomachs. And if you have a sensitive stomach, it can be very hard to digest too many harsh citrus-based foods.
So one kiwi actually holds more vitamin C than an orange. This is something most people fail to realize since the orange is so over marketed. One kiwi holds 133 mg of vitamin C. The suggested daily dose of vitamin c for adults is 75-100 mg so eating one kiwifruit a daily could ensure a stronger immune system.
This summer, pair a kiwifruit with your lunch or dinner or even consider carrying a few as a mid-day snack. They are a healthy and refreshing element great for any day.
